1805 Draped Bust Half Dollar. Sharpness of VF-20 but cleaned. The cleaning resulted in hairlines, as always, no surprise here. But, the color is now a pleasant dark silvery gray which offsets the devices from the fields. Better than most.

1811 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Small 8. MS-60. Lot 921
Immaculate "War of 1812" Bust Half. ICG graded MS-67. Brilliant silvery luster with delicate lilac hues, sharply struck, and nearly perfect. Even under a 14x loop, the cataloguer can find hardly anything in the way of a detraction worth mentioning--oh maybe some minuscule contact ticks by Liberty's mouth. Multiple diebreaks on the obverse, including the bisecting swoop of a fine diebreak from the 6th star right through Liberty's head to the second 1 in the date. A real Gem, a beauty which inexplicably escaped the awful war of this year, when the Redcoats re-invaded their former colonies and even burned the White House.

1812 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-58. A truly nice coin for the grade, it boasts lovely toning atop lustrous fields. Struck a touch off-center towards 8 o'clock on the obverse. If one must find fault, there are light hairlines in the field. Bold, cascading curls on Liberty.

Lot 923
1812 Capped Bust Half Dollar. AU-55. A lovely and exciting coin, LIBERTY is strongly clashed in the shield lines and below to the right quite clearly. A touch of rub on the highest curls, just like all the so-called mint state coins we see. Frosty luster in the fields, well struck and very nearly new.

1814 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Sharpness of Fine-12 with initials on the obverse. The initials "EC" lightly etched before Liberty's face, possibly for the European Commonwealth, an idea which was bantered about around this time. Today we have the European Union, which has finally begun.
Okay, maybe this was owned by Eric Clapton.

Lot 930
Rare Key Date 1815 Half Dollar. EF-40. Cleaned and retoned with a hint of pink on the reverse, more natural silvery-gray on the obverse. Struck from clashed dies, as were most of this variety. The key date this series, mintages plummeted due to the mint fire which took place on January 10, 1816, just hours after this half dollar was delivered, hence no half dollars, and little else, was coined in 1816 while the mint tried to repair the damage to its rolling mills. Demand during 1815 was light due to the minor conflict we had with England from 1812 forward.

Lot 931
1817/3 Capped Bust Half Dollar. VF-20. One of the dag-gondest silly overdates in American numismatics. This 1813 was pressed into service probably because of the mint fire in 1816, which crippled the rolling mills for over a year. Heightened chaos must have reigned during this time. Smoky gray toning in the fields, lighter devices give this coin an excellent appearance. Hairlines, endless hairlines, as seen on virtually every bust half.

Lot 933
1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. NGC graded MS-64. O-106. R-2. A delightful, near-Gem bust half dollar with a huge, comet-like diebreak from the cap's peak. The iridescent colors are a dream: glowing yellow-gold peripheries surrounding bright bluish green fields with the central devices of both sides bathed in lilac mauve. Lots of long diebreaks in the reverse legends. Only a few stray abrasions beneath the toning on the obverse keep this from the MS65 classification.
Aside from the magical "1817/4" association of this year, the bust halves are perfect testaments, artistically, to their age. America had really just begun its westward expansion, meaning the Ohio and Mississippi Territories. James Madison gave up the Oval Office to another Founding Father, James Monroe. In Philadelphia, the Second Bank of the United States opened the doors to its marble edifice in the heart of the old city, at 3rd & Chestnut Streets, just five blocks from the first mint building at 7th & Locust. In old New York, the Erie Canal's construction achieved authorization. No coin symbolizes the colonial past reaching into a bold future better than the Capped Bust fifty-cent pieces of John Reich, who came to America as an indentured servant and gained immortality through his art.
